Red Ink by Kathi Macias

The Red Ink Virtual Book Tour December ‘10

About Red Ink

Yang Zhen-Li defies not only her Communist parents but the government as well when she marries a poor Christian peasant and converts to his faith. When she begins to distribute Christian materials, particularly to children, she is arrested and sentenced to ten years of hard labor. Will her husband and son wait for her and support her throughout their long separation? Will she even survive to return to them once again? Or will the evil guard Tai Tong, who has taken a personal dislike to Zhen-Li, convince her to deny her faith? Two elderly saints halfway around the world are determined to pray her through, though they’ve never met her and don’t even know her name. God’s faithfulness in the midst of unimaginable trials will bring about an ending that could never be anticipated—but will never be forgotten.

Read an Excerpt!

Prologue
Yang Zhen-Li was nearing thirty but at times felt twice that old. Her back was becoming permanently bent forward from the heavy pails she carried daily, one attached on each end of the thick bamboo rod that stretched across her shoulders, mirroring the heaviness of her heart. There had been a time when she’d been acclaimed as a beauty, but she could scarcely remember why…or imagine that it would matter.
She tried to fight the encroaching darkness, tried to hold fast to what she knew was true, but the constant lies and propaganda were taking a greater toll even than the physical labor and abuse or the burning, gnawing hunger. If her situation didn’t change soon, she knew she would never live long enough to see her husband or son again. And with nearly eight years of her ten-year sentence left to serve, the possibilities of her emerging from prison alive grew dimmer by the day.
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. She forced herself to focus on one of the many scripture verses she’d had opportunity to memorize between the time she accepted Zhu Yesu as her Savior and her arrest by members of the Public Security Bureau (PSB) on charges of teaching religion to children, including giving them papers containing religious writings. Even before her arrest, her parents had written to her—warned her, begged her, threatened her—and finally had her kidnapped in an attempt to convince her to go along with the government rules, especially the one limiting each family to one child. After all, she already had a healthy son. Why would she want another baby when they could scarcely afford to feed the first one? But though her abductors had forcibly aborted her second child, they had not succeeded in convincing Yang Zhen-Li to abandon the faith she had adopted before marrying her Christian husband. If anything, the ordeal had only strengthened her resolve to take a stand for the meaning of her name—Zhen-Li, “Truth,”—and spurred her to begin actively sharing the Good News of Yesu every chance she got. As a trained teacher, that quite naturally included talking with children about the gospel, a practice expressly forbidden by the government.
And now she was paying the price. Separated from her family and sentenced to ten years of hard labor and “re-education,” Zhen-Li struggled to survive against pain, exhaustion, and bitter loneliness. Worst of all were the times she felt God had abandoned her. It wasn’t enough to know in her mind that He promised never to leave or forsake her. She needed a visible reminder—soon—if she was to continue to remain faithful behind these prison walls.

MY REVIEW
Kathi's books are full of faithfulness, not only of the characters, but of the God they serve. The God I serve!  And, also of Kathi's faithfulness to write stories that inspire God's people and strengthen them.

Kathi touches hard subjects, but with grace and honesty and love.

Red Ink is a must read for every Christian, especially those who are living complacent lives.  After reading Kathi's Extreme Devotion series, you'll want to go out do more for God in this dying world.

Through the hard time in my own life right now, Kathi's new book, Red Ink, has reminded me that I am not bound by a physical cage, so why should I be bound by a spiritual cage.

Yes, I am going through some hard trials in life.  Yes, the devil has plans to destroy me and my family.  BUT.... God is bigger!!

If Zhen-Li  can still share about her God even when she is in prison for loving and serving Him... then I can shout from the mountain tops that my God is alive and I am gonna serve Him, even through the trials!

If I... I Will by Debbie Covington

Will You Let the Crowd Stop You?

I've recently taken on a roll that I never saw myself ever being in: Women's Ministry Leader.  Not that it is a bad position to be in, or that I don't love the place God has me, but I always wanted to be the one getting fed, not feeding. I wanted to be the one to go to cool women's retreats, not planning them.

But God has me in a place that I have stepped out from the crowd to move deeper in my relationship with Christ, and in doing so I am encouraging the women in my congregation to go deeper too.

So, what if I didn't have the courage or strength like the suffering women in Mark 5 to step out of the crowd into uncomfortable waters to pursue Jesus? What if she'd never taken that step and touched Jesus gown, would she have died from her issue? Would she have had another chance in life to get healed by the Ultimate Healer?

Who's to say. But what I do know is that you don't always get a second chance.

Pursuing God and encouraging women in my life to move closer with me, not only makes the step a little less fearful, but also makes my step a little more worth taking.

So I ask, do you need to step out of the crowd, or are you going to allow them to hold you back?

This thought provoking devotion sprung up in me due to studying Debbie Covington's new book,  If I...I Will.  Pick up a copy for yourself.  It is well worth the read.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
If I…I will: simple words, but do we ever move past the “ifs” in our lives? Do we know in our hearts and minds that God indeed will help us to achieve our dreams and goals? If I…I Will is an insightful look at the healing of the suffering woman in Mark 5 whom Jesus healed. And just like that suffering woman, we must step past our suffering, the words we may hear, our own thoughts, and the crowds around us to reach for Jesus. What if we reach Jesus? Will He change our lives forever? Will He heal us? Yes, indeed! Maybe Jesus won’t follow the way we envision the healing or the change to happen, but faith in Jesus will forever change us. So, step out and reach for Jesus’ hand, and begin the adventure of a lifetime.

Devotions for the God Girl: A 365 Day Journey by Hayley DiMarco

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
What does it mean to be a girl who follows God? That's the question bestselling author and teen mentor Hayley DiMarco helped teens answer in the bestseller God Girl. And now in this 365-day devotional, she guides girls ages 14-18 on a daily journey of learning more about who God is and who he created them to be.Each one-page devo contains a scripture verse of the day along with a brief reflection that unpacks spiritual truths about becoming a woman of God. And in each entry Hayley challenges girls to choose God's way in every area of their life--with their thoughts, actions, and daily choices about everything from friends and fashion to faith.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hayley DiMarco is chief creative officer and founder of Hungry Planet, where she writes and creates cutting-edge books that connect with the multitasking mind-set. She has written and cowritten numerous bestselling books for both teens and adults, including Dateable, Mean Girls, Sexy Girls, Technical Virgin, and God Girl. Hayley lives with her husband and daughter in Nashville, Tennessee.

MY REVIEW

I have not had the opportunity before not to read any of DiMarco's books. I have read one that she wrote with her husband, but never one of her books.

I swooped up the opportunity to review this devotional for teens because I have worked with teen girls before (and I have two daughters that will soon be teenagers before I know it) and I know the importance of having a good solid, down-to-earth, Biblical-view devotion that girls really want to read and can relate to....
I have found one!

I love everything about this book.  The cover is gorgeous, yet simple and inviting.  The devotionals are not only thought-provoking but grounded into God's word and relative to teen girls everywhere.

I love that the fonts are a little different to accent certain phrases, words and thoughts. This is eye catching and makes it easier to grasp important tidbits.

Toto's Tales by K.D. Hays and Meg Weidman

Toto's Tale

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Toto the terrier and his pet girl Dorothy have their world turned upside down by a cyclone that rips their house from ground and spins it into the land of Oz. In this strange place, cats grow way bigger than they should and they speak the same language as Dorothy. So now Dorothy spends her time talking to a giant cat, a walking scarecrow, and a hollow man made of metal.
The five of them follow a brick road to see the Great Lizard who is supposed to give them something. Although Toto is hoping for a pork chop, he will settle for a trip back to Kansas. But when they reach the Great Lizard (who turns out to be a big human head), instead of helping them, he sends them out to kill a witch.
Toto enables them to survive attacks by killer bees and mad wolves, but the annoying monkeys with wings prove too much even for him, and the monkeys are able to carry him and Dorothy to the witch’s castle.
Once there, he realizes the witch is after the shoes that Dorothy picked up when they first landed in Oz. He also realizes that the witch can be destroyed with water. It becomes a race to see if the witch can trick Dorothy into giving up the shoes before Toto figures out how to melt her.
But even if he destroys the witch, they still have to figure out how to get home…

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
K.D. HaysK.D. Hays and Meg Weidman are a mother-daughter team who aspire to be professional roller coaster riders and who can tell you exactly what not to put in your pockets when you ride El Toro at Six Flags. Meg is studying art in a middle school magnet program. For fun, she jumps on a precision jump rope team and reads anything not associated with school work. K.D. Hays, who writes historical fiction under the name Kate Dolan, has been writing professionally since 1992. She holds a law degree from the University of Richmond and consequently hopes that her children will pursue studies in more prestigious fields such as plumbing or waste management. They live in a suburb of Baltimore where the weather is ideally suited for the four major seasons: riding roller coasters in the spring and fall, waterslides in the summer and snow tubes in the winter. Although Meg resents the fact that her mother has dragged her to every historical site within a 200-mile radius, she will consent to dress in colonial garb and participate in living history demonstrations if she is allowed to be a laundry thief.

MY REVIEW
I wanted to read this alone before reading with my kids. I have few book lovers of my own, but I am very cautious about what I allow them to read.

I plan to read this with my kids!

The twist on telling the story from Toto's point of view was a fun twist. The ideas and perspective made for thought provoking read. I never really took time to think about things from the pets point of view, or even from my child's point of view.

Hays and Weidman have a good flow and good writing style.

This book will stay in my kid's home library.

Cookie Lee Jewelry: GIVEAWAY

Books top my list of FAVORITE THINGS,
but right up there with books is JEWELRY!

Necklaces are my favorite, but I love earrings, and bracelets and rings too!
So when I was given the wonderful opportunity to review and promote a friend's business
I was (and still am) so excited!

My friend, Jeannine, is an independent Cookie Lee consultant.
She is located in Northern Utah, but through her new website you can purchase from her even if you live in New York, Montana, or in the South.

I received two amazing pieces from Jeannine to review.
They can easily be wore alone, together or layered with other pieces.

The first piece is the Shell Water Necklace which is a 17-20" Genuine Abalone piece.
It is an amazing piece that matches every color
and changes colors depending on the colors around it.

The second piece I received was the matching pendent,
which is a 15-18" Genuine Abalone reservable cross.
(Can be found on page 35 of the Fall/Winter 2010 catalog.)

I have wore these pieces together in a layering style
as well as each individually.

Here are a few pictures so you can how the pieces look against different colors.
I apologize for not having any pictures of me wearing the pieces. My hubby works long hours, so I don't have a photographer around to take pictures of me wearing the pieces.

Below I just layered the cross
with another simple bead necklace from my personal collection.
Simple yet still so stylish!

One other thing I want to mention is that I have a LONG list of Gotta-Haves from Cookie Lee.

Here are a few:

Catch up with Whit, Connie, Eugene, and Wooton, and meet two new families, as they learn lessons about responsibility, revenge, and God-given inspiration. Whether on a baseball field, at home, or at Whit’s End, there’s never a dull moment in the town of Odyssey!

ABOUT ADVENTURES IN ODYESSEY
Adventures in Odyssey, commonly abbreviated AIO or simply Odyssey, is an Evangelical Christian-themed radio drama/comedy series created by Phil Lollar and Steve Harris for Focus on the Family in 1987.

 MY REVIEW

Any parent can't go wrong with Adventures in Odyssey. Visiting Witt's End was something I started doing after becoming a Christian at age 12. And now, having the privilege to join my kids in new adventures is a blast!

I love the audio versions of the stories, because it allows my kids to use their minds instead of being glued to the TV. I also love the fact that I don't have to worry about what they hear because i know that Focus on the Family is dedicated to bringing great clean, family friendly entertainment to us.

The lessons that Take It From the Top teaches are timeless.

My favorite episode on #51 Take it From the Top is "Clutter" where the Parker family de-clutters and learns in the process that we are to store our treasures up in heaven!

Any album of Adventures of Odyssey makes a great gift for any kids. I know we love to enjoy ours in the car while running errands around town!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Max is the only author to have won three Christian Book of the Year* awards—in 1999 for Just Like Jesus, in 1997 for In the Grip of Grace, and in 1995 for When God Whispers Your Name. In 2005, Reader’s Digest magazine dubbed him “America’s Best Preacher” and in 2004, Christianity Today magazine called him “America’s Pastor.” The product line for 3:16—The Numbers of Hope sold more than four million units worldwide, including one million units of the cornerstone trade book of the same title (released in September 2007), making it the fastest selling Lucado product in his career.
His works have appeared on every major

MY REVIEW
Here is a little secret, but promise not to tell anyone, do you promise? Okay, here it is... this is the very first Max Lucado book I've ever read. Yep, it's true, many of them are in my home library but I've never read any of them.

So, being a *NEW* fan of Lucado I can honestly say WOW!

I've always thought about living a legacy, one like my grandma left for everyone to remember. One that makes you want a deeper faith. One that makes you want to know the God that she knew in the depth that she did. One that is worth remembering.

Lucado has included some real ways that real people can live a mark for God on this world for future generations to remember. Making a difference in the lives of those you and know and those you don't.

I enjoyed Lucado's word pictures. His writing reminds me of the parables that Jesus used to teach the crowds, so visual.

I'm a new Lucado fan, luckily for me I own many of his books already!

Happy Reading!

Loving God with All your Heart by Susie Hobson

Do you run more on empty than full?
Do you always feel like there is more out there for you?

This book will take you deeper into your heart's desire for a real relationship with God, a powerful relationship that will transform your whole life! Susie Hobson reminds us that the love we all long for begins and ends with a life that is surrendered to Jesus. From her real experience she offers practical application of communing with God through His Word to inspire and encourage a closer walk, resulting in empowerment for faithful living. Susie gives a clear path to the fulfillment of the greatest desire of man's heart—God's unfailing love as the foundation for wisdom and serving God in our homes and community. This book should fill a real need among families who long for a Biblical order in the home. Susie's testimony is absorbing.

 ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Susie photo_color_sm

Susie Hobson has a B.A. in Special Education, M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Alabama University, and carried a deaf / hearing-impaired and blind / vision-impaired caseload for 16 years. She retired for more time with family and to write as God has called her. She and her husband Rich have two daughters, Whitney and Amelia, live in Montgomery, and attend Lakeview Baptist Church.

MY REVIEW

The greatest commandment: Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Just reading that command can make your heart skip a beat. How can any one do that? In her book, Susie reminds us that spending time with God is an important part of loving Him with all our heart. Just as we know the people that we love the most on this earth (spouse, children, best friends, etc.). It is no different in loving God, we must know Him.

Loving God with All Your Heart is an easy and encouraging read with practical advice. Though we as Christians know that God wants to know us and wants us to know Him, Susie's book is that encouraging reminder of what happens when we engulf ourselves in knowing God.

This is an excellent encouraging book to gift a friend who might be traveling down a bumpy road, or just needs a little reminder of God's love.

Heaven and Hell: the Journey of Chris and Serena Davis by Kenneth Zeigler

Cover Image

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Chris and Serena Davis held hands as they walked toward the portal, leaving the twisted wreck of their car—and their bodies—behind. Then they parted. Chris walks into the presence of God and an endless existence of love and contentment. Serena is tossed into the depths of Hell where she faces an eternal life of pain and hopelessness. Through God's mercy, those who dwell in Heaven have no recollection of loved ones in Hell—except Chris. He could not, would not, let her go, even though he realized that his loving wife had been given an eternal life sentence in Hell. Serena remembers Chris as well. In fact, it is part of Hell to remember and long for loved ones. What Serena sees and experiences in Hell makes her yearn for the love of her husband—and for the God she didn't accept. But there is hope—a faint hope that Chris and Serena can be together again. Serena's fate is in Chris's hands. Can he bridge the chasm that separates their realms before she is lost forever to Satan and the sea of fire? Can true love change the eternal plan of God? Can a man step into the depths of hell and save his beloved?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ken Zeigler, 54, is the author of the Tears of heaven series. He's been writing stories since junior high school;  science  fiction  short  stories mostly.  He attended Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.  He openly profess Jesus Christ to be my personal Lord and Savior.

It wasn't always that way.  The change in his life came about  as  the result of  a  near death experience when he was eighteen years old. The circumstances of that experience were so remarkable that his life hasn't been the same since.

MY REVIEW
Talk about a roller coaster ride!

I've been to heaven, hell and everywhere in between with this novel by Zeigler! What a ride!

Zeigler has a great writing style that brought depth and life to his characters, especially the two main characters; husband and wife, Serena and Chris Davis.

Though I personally do not believe that all of this can happen, its a novel so I won't nit-pick at that. I'll just stick to the writing, the idea and the originality of the book.

Zeigler had me guessing up to the very end. His twists and turns and wild ride had my mind whirling around the possible outcomes.

This is a journey that was worth the time, as this is a thick book, 554 pages.

This is the first book in the Tears of heaven series. I look forward to reading more by Kenneth Zeigler.

 MY REVIEW

You know, I secretly wish that I had been born in the Little House on the Prairie times... simple clothes, simple house, simple life. No car problems, broken TVs or crashing computers. No telephone ringing off the hook or repair man to wait for. You know, the simple life!

Joanne has offered simple solutions to helping you (and me) live a simple life. As I read through her book I realized that I do live a pretty simple life. Partially because for the past eight years we've been a one income family; so though not by choice always, we lived a simple life in material possessions, thus helping us live a simple life in life, time and celebration. I am in no way saying that we lived poor, but we did have our times were we went without lots of extras just to have food on the table and a roof over our heads, even to going without a vehicle for over a year.

Talk about a simple life. But honestly it was nice.

Now that God has moved my husband into bigger and better higher paying positions we still live simple.
Why? you ask.
Why change a good thing?

I like not celebrating every birthday of my kids with a huge party, house full of two dozen kids and a sheet cake that more ends up on the floor than in the kids' mouths. (We celebrate every 5th birthday with a BIG party, other than that it's a nice quiet night doing the activity of the birthday person's choice.)

I enjoy making memorable home made gifts for friends and family for Christmas presents, instead of taking out a loan to pay for them.

I love being able to have time with my family after dinner instead of running child #1 to soccer practice, while hubby runs child #2 to dance and child #3 carpools to swimming lessons.

I like my simple life and Joanne has hit so close to home with many of her points including this one that can be found on page 45:

Living simply involves changing our thinking, looking at our lives from a  different perspective. It means stopping to ask myself why I am doing something and making choices that reflect my purpose.

Below are some questions I've heard one point in time or another:
So why don't each of your kids have an extracurricular activity scheduled year around? Why don't you cook big meals every night? Why don't you have decor on every wall of your house? Why are you a one vehicle family? Why do you only own one TV? Why do you make your family come to the table instead of allowing them to take their plate and plop a seat in front of the TV?
The answer for me is simple and this is how I answer them:
I feel that I am living the way I feel Jesus has lead me and this is the way I feel he has me to raise my kids.

A question that Joanne asks in her book is one that I want to ask you readers:
What makes your life complicated?

If I had to say what makes my life complicated, I'd have to think for a long time... because I am blessed to say that my life isn't complicated. For me I feel that I have chosen to include those things that important to God to make important in my life and thus I feel confident in knowing that all that is on my plate is what God has allowed me time, energy and room for.

I am not saying that I never have a day that I wonder if God is ready to allow me to send my kids to school away from home. Or wondering if this or that can be set aside for now, or for forever. But for the most part my life is not full of stress or worry or chaos or crying or complaining or frustration... I feel that I have chosen many roads that have helped me to be Living Simply, just as Joanne Heim has suggested.

 MY REVIEW

WOW!!  What writer can compare to Max Lucado?

This is the first book I have read of Lucado, though I have heard sermons and read tidbits and quotes of his, I had never read a full book of his... why did I wait so long?

God has given him a great gift with words and anyone who has not read anything by him needs to! You will walk away challenged and refreshed.

The Women in Jesus' Life by Mindy Ferguson

The Women in Jesus Life

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Jesus felt the pain of those who grieved; spoke to the unacceptable; healed the sick; extended grace to the sinner; made the crippled whole.  Through this six week study, experience the compassionate and merciful nature of our Savior.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In a world that urges us to live for ourselves, Mindy Ferguson encourages women to live for Christ. She founded Fruitful Word Ministries in April 2003 and is passionate about encouraging women of all denominations to develop a more intimate and fruitful relationship with Jesus Christ through the study of God's Word.
Mindy stumbled her way into the arms of Christ at the age of twenty-six. She speaks nationally at women's events and at retreats as one who understands the tug of worldly passions and the emptiness of selfish ambition. Her writings have appeared in Christianity Today's Kyria.com, the P31 Woman magazine, Just Between Us magazine, Chicken Soup for the Mother of Preschooler's Soul, and the One Year Life Verse Devotional. Mindy is the author of the in-depth Bible study, Walking with God: From Slavery to Freedom; Living the Promised Life. Mindy latest book, Hugs Bible Reflections for Women, is now available in bookstores.
Mindy lives in a suburb of Houston, Texas with her husband of twenty-two years and their daughter. Their son is currently attending college in Bryan, Texas.

MY REVIEW
I think for women, learning about the women in Jesus' life is an awesome study. Many times we as women feel a bit forgotten, overwhelmed, overloaded with life's to-do lists and laundry and caring for the kids, the house and our husbands.

As I studied through Mindy's book, I have seen that each circumstance that brought these women to Jesus was different. Each lady came with her own specific need, whether it be healing for self or a family member, or she had a longing to know more about Jesus as King, Jesus met each need.

For us, we each will get a little something different from this study, but all in all we will each walk away knowing that no matter the reason we come to Jesus, He will touch us!

I am excited to use this bible study as a reference point for a women's bible study at my local church. I am excited that God led Mindy to remind us that He loves us women and we are special. So special that he set time aside from His busy schedule during His ministry on earth to touch those came to Him with a need.

MY REVIEW
Jay and Laura share some fun, hilarious and vital information in igniting (or RE-ignigting) "The Spark" in your marriage.
I am blessed to have a great marriage. My hubby and I got married at age 19 and 20 and we sure had a rocky time for the first four or five years, but with God's grace, great marriage books and lots of prayer and willingness to give 100% we have an awesome relationship.

I did  learned a few new pointers from The Spark, mostly because a new fresh perspective. This is the first book I've read by Jay and Laura. I had never heard of their ministry but after doing a little research it seems to be helping many couples and doing an awesome job for God.

My favorite story, was one that Jay shared about his proposal to Laura. I laughed like crazy and wondered if my hubby would have still wanted me to have the ring her offered if I'd done the same thing to him. (You have to read it... it was crazy hilarious!)

This is a MUST READ for every couple. Even if you have a great marriage like ours, whether your on the brink of divorce or your getting ready to say I Do, every married couple can benefit from the light heartedness and truth that Jay and Laura present.

You can find out more about their ministry and couple conferences at their website.
