Healing Sands (A Sullivan Crisp Novel) by Nancy Rue and Stephen Aterburn

Book Description

In the struggle for healing, when do you fight and when do you surrender?

Ryan Alexander-Coe is a talented photojournalist who has been on assignment all over the world. But when her two sons choose to live with their father after her divorce, Ryan must give her career up for a small-town newspaper job in order to be near them.

Life spirals out of control when her fifteen-year-old son is arrested. Desperation--both over the fact that she cannot believe her son committed this crime and that he refuses to talk to her--sends her anger level soaring . . . and eventually sends her storming into Dr. Sullivan Crisp's office in search of ways to cope with her anger. Sully is in town assisting at one of his clinics and continuing his search for Belinda Cox, the woman whose guilt-inducing counseling caused the death of his wife and daughter. When Sully's search ends in disaster, both he and Ryan will have to fully rely on God--rather than themselves--to survive these storms.

My Review

As with many of the other books I've reviewed on my site, this was a first for me by authors Rue and Arterburn. And a good new at that!

I was engaged quickly by the way we learn that Ryan's son is the suspect in a hate crime. And of course, like every mother out there we swear up and down that our child is not capable of that kind of thing.

Ryan is facing hard challenges in life and Rue and Arterburn do not hide that fresh reality from the reader. You know exactly what she is feeling by the way they write. Sullivan Crisp is neither the boy next door nor the typical shrink. His Christian basis makes him a highly sought after counselor but he is on his own journey.

I was captivated and engaged. A very good read, but definitely not a light feel good book. What can you expect when it is written about a counselor? I am surprised it didn't go even deeper than it did!

There is a very strong message of surrendering to God. I like when a book can relay a profound message without shoving it down your throat.

My dislike about this book is that there is relationship that goes un-mended. I know in real life things don't always get fixed, but I like to think in books that there is always a "happily ever after'.

I am looking forward to adding the other two books in the Sullivan Crisp Series to my personal library; Healing Stones and Healing Waters.

*This book was a gift from the Thomas Nelson Publishing. My review was not paid for and the fact of a free book does not change my review of this book.

Hi!

Thought I'd check your blog out. Glad I did. This book is very appealing to me. Oh, that front cover is wonderful!

I suppose it should be for a talented photojournalist!

I've added your banner to my blog - I'd love to do an exchange. Mine is the one with the flag. Unfortunately I don't know how to make those great html boxes - or whatever they are called! LOL

Hugs,

CeCe~ Thanks for stopping by!

Healing Sands was a great book. It'd be a great one to discuss in a book club setting! The beginning is kindof a slow, then pickup, then slow down again kindof beginning... but once it picks up it gets to where I couldn't put it down... I had to finish it in one day!

You'll enjoy it!
Have you read the others in the Crisp Series?
