GAME REVIEW: Word on the Street Junior: Out of the Box ~GIVEAWAY!~

from
OUT OF THE BOX PUBLISHING

Word on the Street Junior
The Wacky Tug of Words

Word on the Street™ Junior brings the excitement of Word on the Street™ to the entire family! Each turn, one team flips over a category card and team members quickly brainstorm words that fit the category. The team agrees on a word before the time runs out and then pulls each letter in that word one lane closer to their side of the street. The first team to pull eight letters off the street wins!

MY REVIEW

What an AWESOME game!

I played this game with my kids, ages eight, six and five. My two older ones are each ahead a grade in school and are avid readers and writers. My five year old son is learning to read and recognize his letters.

I heart Pictures, Images and Photos
this game for a few reasons.

  1. It helps younger kids recognize the letters as well as where they are located in alphabetical order.
  2. This game gets them thinking of words to go with a certain category. I love the categories they have the kid thinking about. Things totally on their level:
    • Something found in a School
    • A Yellow Food
    • A piece of furniture
    • and many more!
    • I love the repetition of spelling each word out loud as they use a letter. They are now not only spelling a word, they are touching the letter as they move it AND speaking the letter and word as they spell it! This game incorporates visual, auditory and tactile learning styles so there is something for every child!
    • Team work has no "I"! The kids learn to work together.
    • Brainstorming is a great thing for kids to learn. It will help them in everything they will do from this point on in life, whether it be life or school. The kids brainstorm out loud for thirty seconds, sharing ideas about which word to use. Then they decide on which word to use.
    • I am very impressed with the goal of the game. As you try to 'capture' letters the kids must think out of the box in the fact that it is not about spelling the biggest word, it is about using the right combination of letters to get the letters to your side. (My daughters pick u[p on this quickly and won the first two games against my son and myself.)

How I plan to use this game in our homeschooling:
A variation I am going to randomly place the letters on the bard instead of placing them in alphabetical order. This will help my son as he is learning to recognize his letters, instead of singing the ABC song in his head to find where it is.

I plan to have my daughters use a dictionary after they pick and spell the word. They will then read the dictionary entry out loud so everyone playing can hear. By doing this, they get used to using the dictionary to look up words, as well as reading the meaning so they become more familiar with the definitions.
